Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) is the 13th public university established in 1998 with the act (Act No. 16) promulgated by the Parliament, Government of Bangladesh. The university was, in fact, established by transforming the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA). IPSA was originally established as the Bangladesh College of Agricultural Sciences (BCAS) in 1983 as an academic organ of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and academically affiliated with Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) until 1991.
In 1991, IPSA was made an autonomous institution through promulgation of act (Act No. 13) by the Parliament, Government of Bangladesh. Henceforth, IPSA started its truly Course-credit based M. S. and Ph. D. programs in 1991. The Graduate program of IPSA was developed by a competent team of IPSA teachers led by Prof. L. M. Eisgruver of the Oregon State University (OSU), USA under the tripartite cooperation project of JICA-USAID-GOB. In a short period of time, IPSA was nationally and internationally recognized as the “Centre of Excellence” for its outstanding performance in its Term based Course-Credit System of Graduate program, and research. The uninterrupted implementation of graduate program as per approved annual academic calendar, quality education through term-based course-credit system, a rare instance of students’ unrest, timely completion of degree requirements and satisfaction of the employers were the fascinating features of IPSA academic performance, which founded it attaining “Centre of Excellence” status. With the commitment of keeping up its status of excellence, BSMRAU has been continuing the former Graduate program of IPSA. In an expansion process of the university and to meet up the demand of quality graduate in agriculture, BSMRAU, after a decade of its successful operation of Graduate Program, launched Undergraduate Program adopting the similar term-based course-credit system under the Faculty of Agriculture in 2005 to offer Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture [BS (Agriculture)].
The faculties are committed to uphold the academic excellence of the university at all levels, and are always ready to extend their cooperation at students needs. However, the more comprehensive, challenging and dedicated their high school and college program is, student will be proved the better prepared for work at BSMRAU.
